Hogan’s Heroes-The Ending

Due to the abrupt cancellation of the TV show, Hogan’s Heroes, some speculate what would have happened if the series continued another season and featured the end of WWII.

Years later, M*A*S*H ended its run with the ending of the Korean Conflict.

Here are my thoughts on Hogan’s Heroes.

Hogan’s Heroes was one of my father’s favorite TV shows.

I watched it with him all the time when growing up.

In every episode, the Germans lost and were made to look like fools. Dad’s brother was killed by the nazis in WWII, and he found some healing watching the Germans being beaten on Hogan’s Heroes.

Hogan’s Heroes was canceled without a conclusion or ending episode where the Allies won the war. Some people have speculated how the ending should have been.

I wrote my version of the end of the war on the Facebook group. Fans of Hogan’s Heroes. It was highly praised by the members. Here it is.

The War is over.

“Old scrambled brains” is dead!

The Americans arrive at Stalag 13. Hogan’s Heroes hide Klink and Schultz down in the tunnels to prevent them from being charged with war crimes.

They are shocked and surprised about the tunnels and that Hogan is helping them.

Hogan reveals everything to them and says the Allies wouldn’t have won the war without the ineptness of Klink and Schultz, allowing their sabotage and spy network.

Klink and Schultz are American heroes.

Burkhaulter comes down the ladder of the emergency tunnel to the surprise of Hogan and everyone.

Burkhalter says he has known about the tunnels since day one.

He reveals he is Nimrod and shows a picture of himself and Eisenhower with the code words “apple strudel plus nine is 13.”

Kinch (who returned for the last episode) radios the sub, and Mamma Bear confirms everything.

Burkhalter says the reason he put Dummkopfs Klink and Schultz at Stalag 13 was to help Hogan and the Americans.

Burkhalter has papers and plans for him, Klink, and Schultz to escape to America.

Burkhaulter says Klink must do one thing for safe passage, and if he doesn’t, he will be left behind for the Russians to get him.

Klink asks what it is, and then Burkhaulter’s sister Gertrude climbs down the ladder!

Klink agrees to marry Gertrude.

They all climb up the bunk bed ladder to the barracks and out the door.

Burkhaulter leads the group to the gate. He shows his papers to the American guards in charge. They check the papers and make a call to headquarters. The American gets his answer and salutes General Burkhaulter.

The whole gang walks out the front gate, whistling the Hogan Heroe’s theme song.

Marya comes running from the woods, kisses Hogan and Labeau, and joins them.

As they continue, Colonel Crittenden is seen planting geraniums along the road, oblivious to everything.

Hogan’s Heroes was dubbed into Deutsch for audiences in Germany. They used different German accents for a comic effect, making characters look foolish. That’s like having a character in an American TV show use a Hillbilly accent.

    Tony,
I just sent you an email. I, too, have always enjoyed Hogan’s Heros! They just don’t make ANYTHING as good as they used to. I wish I had a time machine.

Yeah, Jeff I wish I had a time machine too. Many things were simpler back then. Life in this world can be overwhelming. Even MTV was better back then. It actually played music videos. Now it’s a bunch of reality shows with pregnant teenage girls. Remember head bangers ball?

Thank you. I appreciate your comment. Shows now days lack the skillful writing as Hogan’s Heroes. The show is timeless.

I 100% agree to this ending. I might get backlash for the next statement. AI is now in this world and could be used to “bring back actors and portray these roles again” Make this a memorable finale.

If one TV show needed a finale it is Hogan’s Heroes. It is based on a real event that did have a finish, and the show needs to be finished too. M*A*S*H had a finale, and it was one the most memorable episode in TV history. It is no doubt that AI is getting better every day and that someday a finale could be created if someone wanted to take on that project.

I must say you’ve done an AWESOME JOB of writing the ending!! The only thing that was not mentioned is what happened to Major Wolfgang Hochstetter? He maybe should be shown either being arrested and getting charged with war crimes or better yet he loses all control and acts as the fool and is sent to a mental institution for observation…LOL Other then that I wouldn’t change a single thing!! This would of been one of the best episodes ever!! GREAT JOB!!! Hogan Heros is one of my top 5 favorite TV shows of all time, along with Lost in Space, Land of The Giants, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, and Hardcastle & McCormick.
I’m very upset that MeTV decided to remove Hogan’s Heros from there weekday evening lineup (as 0f 3-16-26) and replaced it with the Golden Girls……I mean really the Golden Girls in place of Hogans Heros…what are they thinking?? I live in Racine WI which is almost exactly half way between Milwaukee WI and Chicago Ill and I’m very lucky to recieve both Milwaukee and Chicago OTA Television markets & I’ve been watching MeTV since is was only a Chicago local network and Hogans Heros has been on there lineup since day 1 at launch…..to me MeTV is lost without Hogans Heros on daily!!! Guess it’s time to dust off the old DVD player and pull out my Hogan’s Heros Box set and start bingeing!!! When you said you watched the show with your father, that hit home because I used to watch it with my grandfather and he would tell me stories about when he was in the war….Anyways Awesome Job, I really enjoyed it!! I don’t think the producers or writers could of done a better job!

OMG! I am pissed that MeTV took off Hogan’s Heroes. I have no desire to watch the Golden Girls. I live in Milwaukee and my cousin used to live in Kenosha. I remember as a child she was so lucky to see Milwaukee and Chicago TV stations! It looked like she was in heaven as a kid.
As for Hochstetter, I wanted a good and pleasing ending to Hogan’s Heroes, not exactly a happy ending which would have been unrealistic. Not mentioning Hochstetter implies that he didn’t receive a happy ending. In my mind, he received a prison sentence. He wasn’t evil and didn’t deserve to hang. He was also too much of a doofass to commit serious war crimes, but he needed to be punished for just “following orders.” Mentioning him would spoil the lighthearted atmosphere of the ending I wanted to express, so I remained silent.
      Thanks for your input!

I just thought of something else, what ever happened to Tiger? She was so important during the start of the shows run, and somewhere down the line she was forgotten….I don’t recall her ever being killed off, of captured without rescue. I’m going to watch the entire series episode by episode and pay close attention just in case I missed something

    1. ajtonyperkins Avatar
      ajtonyperkins

I don’t know what happened either. In one early episode, the whole crew risked everything to rescue Tiger from the Gestapo.
I think the actress didn’t want to do Hogan’s Heroes anymore. I saw her on an episode of Star Trek the other day.
