Wham’s “Last Christmas” Becomes Number One!

Released in 1984, the song reached Number One worldwide for the first time this week!

Although the song is about breakups and heartache, it isn’t a “holly jolly” Christmas song. Some even question if it is even a Christmas song at all.

Wham! George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley

I see it as a Christmas song where the singer learns from “last Christmas” and will give his heart to someone else this year.

The singer grows from the mistakes of the past and gives himself a Christmas present, the present of maturing and not making the same mistake again.

This year, the singer won’t waste his precious heart on someone unworthy; instead, he will give it to “someone special.”

Last Christmas
I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year
To save me from tears
I’ll give it to someone special

This year, the world gave the late George Michael a Christmas present by making his song Number One!

The official video by Wham! has images of a ski lodge, skiing, tree trimming, and many of the things you would find at Christmas.

Performed by George Michael, one-half of the Wham! duo, “Last Christmas” was written by him in February 1984 in his childhood bedroom while visiting his parents.

The song was recorded and released later that same year, rising to number two on the UK single charts.
