I was watching a British sitcom the other day, Mrs. Brown’s Boys. It was the episode, “Mammy Christmas.”

At the end of the show, one character sang a song about the nativity that I never heard before.
I thought the song was written for that TV show episode, but I was wrong. It was written 50 years ago and is popular in Britain. It has been recorded and covered several times.
I found it shocking that the song said the Star of Bethlehem that shone over the nativity of baby Jesus was a flying saucer flown by a space alien from another planet.
The lyrics of the song aren’t all that good. Most of the words of the chorus are “La, la, la….”
And it went
La-la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la
Peace and a goodwill to all men
And love for the child
La-la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la la-la-la
Oh-oh-oh
The song is “A Spaceman Came Traveling,” written and first recorded by Chris de Burgh.

Why is this song so popular in Britain?
Is it sacrilegious?
Is it just British humor?
Have a listen.
I’d like to know what you think!
The words to the chorus are almost as bad, if not worse, than the “Da, da, da, da,” of the 1960s Batman TV show theme song!
