Can straight and gay men be best friends? Yes! Says Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Their friendship has lasted decades and is a well-known celebrity bromance.
Stewart and McKellen became friends while filming X-Men.
“We had adjoining trailers,” Stewart began. “On those kind of movies, you spend more time sitting in your trailer than you do in front of the camera. So, Ian and I hung out together, drinking tea — and maybe in the afternoon, something a little stronger — and we got to know one another.”
Stewart speaks of McKellen.
“And the charm of it was that we found that we had so much in common. And by the way, he married us, my wife and me. He performed the ceremony.” (Stewart married singer Sunny Ozell in 2013.)

“Although we’ve not worked together often, we’ve been having parallel careers,” McKellen said. “We speak the same language, we know the same directors, we know the same dressing rooms, and the problems of playing Macbeth. And one of the things we have in common is that we’ll go on doing it as long as we’re allowed.”

Friends Stewart and McKellen share laughs as they imitate each other.
“So our coming together is a relatively recent thing. But we fell into each other’s arms because of our similarities in our career, and because of our age and because we like the same sort of things. Despite the fact that he’s from Yorkshire and I’m from Lancashire! That’s the big difference between us. If Patrick does something other people think is a bit strange, I just say he’s Yorkshire!”

As an American, I don’t understand the difference between Lancashire and Yorkshire. I looked it up, and it goes back to the 1400s and the War of the Roses, which was the battle over the English Throne by the two competing branches of the royal house of Plantagenet: Lancaster and York, As for personal characteristics of an individual that McKellen may be referring to, I can’t find any reference.
It may be similar to a Southerner in America making a negative reference about a “Yankee” which today would be considered more of a joke since the American Civil War ended 150 years ago.
These two counties in England still have their rivalry played out in professional sports teams, including cricket, soccer, and rugby. There is also an annual Olympic-style multi-sports competition between the universities of York and Lancaster during their May holiday break.

The theme of gay and straight friendship and love is a major focus of my memoir. My friend Alex, who was gay, and I were the best of friends.
I believe what is important is to focus on your similarities and not your differences. That’s what Stewart and McKellen have done. They have many things in common and can share these things together in life.
Why focus on the differences? Focus on the similarities. Straight and gay men can be friends.
