I remember in the back of the Archie comics that I read as a kid, back in the 1970s, the ad about the wimpy guy getting sand kicked in his face by the big beach bully.
That has been the story of much of my life.
Of all the many songs that sometimes speak to me in certain parts of my life, “We Are the Champions” resounds the loudest.
When I hear Freddie sing the words,
I’ve paid my dues
Time after time
I’ve done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I’ve made a few
I’ve had my share of sand kicked in my face
But I’ve come through
I know exactly what Freddie is talking about.
I’ve had sand kicked in my face time and time again all through my life. I’ve committed no crime, but I, too, have done my sentence for nothing I did wrong, punished for nothing.
Like Freddie, I am a Champion, and together with him, “we’ll keep on fighting ’til the end.”
I don’t know if I will gain muscles like Charles Atlas in that muscle man ad in the comic book, but I know I will grow stronger every day, even at the age of 60. I am still growing stronger and gaining strength.
There is “no time for losers,” like Freddie says. I am a Champion, and I’m going forward, “fighting ’til the end.”
Towards the end of my memoir, this song plays an important role in my journey in life. I sing along with Freddie and realize, yes, I, too, am a Champion even with my years of life. My best years are yet to come.
Like Freddie, my life has…
… been no bed of roses
No pleasure cruise
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race
And I ain’t gonna lose
Yes, Freddie, you and me, we ain’t gonna lose.
We Are the Champions!
I can relate to and understand much of what Freddie is saying. I too, know that quest to be loved, trying to find someone to love me. It’s been an unaccomplished journey, for the most part, for me.
I can say I have the love of my daughter that I know. People have come and gone throughout my life, and I can say few, if any loved me. People who should have loved me in life, didn’t. I have been surrounded by a lifetime of broken and immature people who didn’t give me love. I didn’t pick my parents or family. That’s life.
So Freddie sings me this song. It’s our anthem. The style of singing is that of a gospel church with the soloist, Freddie, and the background choir. It’s a religion, a spiritual quest, for me and Freddie to find someone to love us. Freddie’s journey is over. My hope and prayer is that he has now found True Love.
I, on the other hand, am still looking, and my journey continues.
